Who We Are
Clifton Lutheran Church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
We are a warm, welcoming community united by a common believe in grace, love, peace and justice rooted in Judeo-Christian values and beliefs. We embrace Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all we do. We openly welcome all to join us in worship and prayer and invite all baptized Christians to join us at Christ's table
Jim Bixby lives in Salem with his wife, Kara, and son, Thomas. You can find them enjoying the local community, whether it’s running the rail trail in Marblehead, hanging out at the Salem Common or kayaking the harbor. Jim has served at Clifton since 2015, building relationships, watching our community grow and expanding outreach efforts.
As a life-long Lutheran, Jim has a deep commitment to ecumenical partnerships and ministry. Clifton has ongoing partnerships with numerous neighboring churches, temples and mosques, including Temple Sinai, the Islamic Society of the North Shore and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church; learn more about our ecumenical projects.
Working with all age groups and wide-ranging populations, Jim has served as a hospital chaplain, youth pastor, pastoral care worker, worship leader, homeless men’s bible study leader, adult education teacher and vacation Bible instructor. He is passionate about bringing the message of Christ to a contemporary age. Prior to his call at Clifton Lutheran, Jim worked at Central Presbyterian Church in downtown St. Paul and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in North St. Paul.
It was at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut that Jim received a call to become a pastor. He majored in religion, had his thesis published and participated in the college’s honors program, which focuses on classical literature, philosophy and history. He went on to study at Luther Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity degree.
To the right you can meet Thomas and Kara, the rest of the Bixby family!
